Here's the answer to some often asked questions:
Where are your chalets?
We're based in St Jean d'Aulps, a village just outside of Morzine. This allows us to offer a much better value holiday without skimping on any of the little extras that make a holiday special.
So you're not in Morzine centre?
No, but many chalets that are "in Morzine" are actually on the outskirts of the town or on the other side of the valley away from the lifts. Often, minibuses are not offered which means you have to wait at the ski bus stop, then jam yourselves onto a crowded bus stopping all the way to the slopes! Why do that, when you can arrive at the slopes in a warm, comfortable, private minibus in less time than it takes you to queue at the bus stop??!
How flexible is your transport?
We drop people off in the morning and pick them up in the afternoon at a pre-arranged time. However, if you need to get back to the chalet during the day, this can be arranged or just pick up the phone and we'll be there as soon as safely possible! We also offer trips into Morzine or up to the St Jean ski station in the evening (up to 11.00-midnight, depending on the weather).
What quality of food do you offer?
We're not chefs but we (and our previous clients) think that the standard of food is well above that of a usual chalet. We use fresh, not frozen, ingredients wherever possible and offer home made jams, preserves and chutneys for as long as they last! Our cakes are famous for being varied, delicious and very big and our hearty main meals ensure no-one ever goes hungry!
Do you offer flights?
Unfortunately not. However, this means you can choose your departure airport, the most convenient flight and the cheapest price as we are totally flexible with your departure and arrival times.
Is there a transfer surcharge if I arrive on a late flight?
No, there are no additional charges to those stated, so you can arrive and leave whenever you like, but we may ask you to fit in with other transfers to resort within a reasonable time. We do ask people to vacate their rooms by 10am so that we can prepare the chalet for the next guests but if your flight is later in the day, we are happy to store your luggage and provide facilities to allow you to shower and change before you leave.
Are airport transfers private?
Airport transfers are operated by our own transfer company, actiontransfers.com. To help the environment and minimise the amount we charge you, we aim to have our buses as full as possible on all journeys. This may mean we are collecting clients for other chalets or hotels. If we ask you to wait, it will never be for more than 30 minutes and wherever possible, our guests are dropped off first.
How long have you been operating?
2010 will be our sixth winter season. We started in 2004 and have grown each year since, thanks to our friendly and professional service, good food and "can do" attitude.
Do I have to book the whole chalet?
No, we are very happy to accept mixed groups. We won't ask you to share rooms with people who are not in your group and we try to ensure that all clients are similar - for example, we wouldn't accept a booking from a group of lads if the other people in the chalet had small children. We want everyone to have a good time and feel comfortable and relaxed. At most times, we are happy to offer sole occupancy of the chalet for groups of 9 or more.
Are there any supplementary charges?
No - you pay per person price plus airport transfers if they are required and that's it. There are no single occupancy supplements.
What is the apres ski like?
St Jean has a very popular British run bar with a pool table and the best pizzas in the Alps! There are three other bars in the St Jean ski station - Avalanche Bar for great apres-ski, Rufus for a more chilled out evening and live sports, or Bar L'Efanle for very loud music! In Morzine, there are numerous bars including Buddha Bar and the Cavern, cinemas and an ice rink which has ice hockey twice a week - Morzine-Avoriaz Pingouins are one of the best teams in France!
What activities are there for non-skiers?
Walking, snow-shoe walking, husky dog driving, snow mobiling, ice skating, shopping, local markets, cinemas, saunas and massage centres are all available in the towns and two of our chalets have outdoor hot tubs!
Is there parking available at the chalets?
Yes, all the chalets have large drives which can take 2 or 3 cars in addition to our minibuses.
Do you offer short breaks?
Yes we do - click here for details.
What is the snow record like for the Portes du Soleil?
The snow record for the area is very good but like any resort, the weather can vary! For the last 2 winters we have had fantastic snow throughout the season (which both ran from mid November-end of April!)...the year before (2006-7), the snow was not great in the majority of resorts across Europe and Morzine was no exception. However, most of our guests ski from Avoriaz which starts at 1700m and is very snowsure and even in 2006-7, ALL of our guests were able to ski EVERY DAY from 15th December to the end of April! There is also a massive network of snow cannons which are used to build a deep base and keep the slopes topped up as necessary.
